Governor Cuomo failed to include the #bFair2DirectCare campaign’s $45 million request to begin funding a living wage for direct support professionals in his initial budget proposal.
BUT, the Governor has another chance to redeem himself and be a hero to all of the people we serve and their families.
Additionally, on behalf of the Jawonio Approved 853 and 4410 Special Education Schools for school-age children and preschoolers with disabilities, we are urging Governor Cuomo to provide $18 million in his budget amendments to increase teacher and teacher’s aides salaries which is a fraction of what they get paid by school districts. This funding is critical to enable our school to attract and retain teachers and therefore, the State’s ability to provide a Free and Appropriate Public Education to children with developmental disabilities.
If we want our children with special needs to lead fulfilling lives, we must compensate our teachers and staff at a level that is commensurate with the difficulty of the work.
Please click your county below to fill out an online petition form to urge Governor Cuomo to provide $45 million for direct care workers and $18 million for special education teachers and teacher’s aides in his budget amendments! Funding is critical to the health, safety and well-being of people with developmental disabilities and children with special needs. It is the right thing to do for the people who work tirelessly caring for them.
